Research And Policy
The New York Building Congress is increasingly being
recognized and relied upon by industry members, public officials and the media as a timely, relevant and accurate source for information on the design, construction and real estate industry. In turn, the Building Congress is growing in influence as a major voice on key policy decisions in City Hall and in Albany.
In January of 2006, the Building Congress produced the third installment of its respected Electricity Outlook series.
The 2006 edition went far beyond the usual five-year
horizon to examine the City’s power needs over the next 20 to 25 years. The purpose was to demonstrate the urgency to work now to accommodate the power demands spurred by such major development initiatives as the World Trade Center, Atlantic Yards and Hudson Yards, as well as planned growth in population, jobs, housing and infrastructure.
The Building Congress also continues to publish its annual New York City Construction Outlook, which now involves periodic interim updates as developments warrant. Construction Outlook is widely quoted in the press in part because it has established a strong track record for accuracy.
The Building Congress has increased the frequency of (e)Update, an electronic newsletter designed to provide up-to-the-minute information on relevant policy issues while suggesting ways in which industry members can become involved. Thanks to its ability to reach members and other key constituents quickly by email, (e)Update is now an integrated part of the Building Congress advocacy agenda and is instrumental in galvanizing industry support for key initiatives such as the 2005 Transportation Bond Act.
To ensure the greatest possible impact, each publication, including the semi-annual NYBC Update newsletter and other periodic issue-specific reports, is distributed and used in a
variety of ways, such as topics for Construction Industry Forums, or Building Congress committee meetings, and as a means of communicating with the media and public officials.
