The
New York Building Congress is proud to be continuing the George A. Fox
Public Service Award it established in 2002. This award is bestowed
annually upon one or more recipients in recognition of outstanding voluntary public
or building industry service above and beyond the normal scope of their
responsibilities.
The Award honors
the extraordinary legacy of George A. Fox, P.E., a man of enormous vision
and integrity. While Mr. Fox inspired our industry through his unsurpassed
construction expertise, creating this award in his name also celebrates
his exceptional commitment to New York City, to the education of its
youth, and to the highest standards of public service.
The Building Congress and the 2007 Selection Committee Co-Chairmen, Victoria J. Cerami of Cerami & Associates and Robert E. Selsam of Boston Properties, Inc., invite you to contribute to George's legacy by nominating for this award those whom you feel best embody his dedication,
integrity, and vision. The nominations will be reviewed by a panel of
our colleagues representing the various disciplines in our industry.
The award subsequently will be bestowed on the honorees at the New York Building Congress 86th Anniversary Leadership Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, May 15, 2007.
Those of us who
knew George personally marveled at his ability to continue giving to
the industry – and the City – he loved. His tireless service
over many decades, and our wish to acknowledge that spirit in others,
is the inspiration for this award.

During his more
than 50 year career, George A. Fox played lead roles in the planning,
design, and management of 70 major public works projects valued in excess
of $61 billion. While millions of New York City’s residents have
benefited from his projects, few have ever seen Mr. Fox’s work,
which mainly consists of elaborate underground tunneling.
George Fox left
his mark on New York everywhere – from the vast subterranean tunnel
structure beneath the City to the education of our youth and promotion
of the highest standards of public service. All who knew him remember
a unique New Yorker who cared and gave much more than he received. |

The 2006 George A. Fox Public Service Award was presented to John V. Magliano, Chairman/CEO of Syska Hennessy Group, and Robert E. Selsam, Senior Vice President of Boston Properties, for their voluntary efforts in education -- Mr. Magliano as President of the ACE Mentor Program of New York and Mr. Selsam as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Salvadori Center.
In presenting the Fox Awards, Selection Committee Co-Chairman Michael S. Della Rocca, President of STV Group, said, “Since assuming the role of President of the ACE Mentor Program of New York three years ago, John Magliano has helped expand the fundraising and organizational participation of the ACE Program which provides valuable opportunities for students and helps foster the next generation of industry professionals.” Of Mr. Selsam, he noted, “The Salvadori Center sends technically-trained educators into the classrooms of more than 100 students each week. With Robert Selsam at the helm, the Center has grown in reach, resources and diversity.”
In his acceptance remarks Mr Magliano said, “The award really belongs to the volunteers and the mentors in the program, as well as the individuals and firms that provide resources to the program and for scholarships. Thanks to their efforts, ACE is able to provide career guidance at a point when it can be most effective.”
Mr. Selsam added, “The important thing is that we teach students that learning is fun. We encourage them to be the type of citizens New York needs, and we know that it works. I am especially touched by this award because of the high esteem I held for George Fox. He set a tremendous example.”
