Co-Chairman Joseph Aliotta welcomed Council members and thanked
AIA New York Chapter President George Miller and Executive Director
Rick Bell for hosting the meeting at the Center for Architecture.
Mr. Aliotta asked for and received approval of the minutes of the
last Council meeting.
Council Membership
Mr. Aliotta asked Council members to review the current roster for
additions or corrections. He said each organization is encouraged
to have at least two principals on the Council.
Mr. Aliotta said that the firm of Einhorn Yaffee Prescott(“EYP”)
has requested membership on the Council. There being no objection,
the firm will be included.
Jerry A. Davis Memorial
Building Congress President Richard Anderson said the memorial gathering
for Jerry Davis at the Center for Architecture on November 15 was
well attended and elicited an outpouring of well wishes for Jerry
Davis’ many contributions to the architectural profession
and the entire building industry. He said former AIA New York Chapter
Executive Director Carol Clark was the driving force behind the
memorial.
Center for Architecture
George Miller welcomed everyone to the Center for Architecture and
described its origins, programs and future. He said it is “a
place of public outreach,” and offers a diverse program of
exhibits and activities. He described the galleries and current
exhibits on city planning and zoning and other subjects. He said
a play, Private Jokes/Public Places, is currently being previewed
and will open soon. Other activities include a housing design competition
and work on “emerging New York architects.”
Mr. Miller said the Chapter and New York Foundation for Architecture
are looking to make the best use of the facility for a wide constituency.
Rick Bell added a word about the flexibility of the space for a
variety of uses; he described the geothermal installation on the
lower level.
In discussion, Council members asked about what’s in the
works and the possibility of a café or book shop.
Future Meetings
Mr. Bell suggested a half dozen possible topics for future Council
meetings. The discussion included the best ways for the Council
to work with the Building Congress, possibly including a session
on Lower Manhattan led by New York New Visions. Mr. Anderson said
he would work with Mr. Bell on that idea.
Other Council activities were discussed. Mr. Aliotta said several
ideas could be pursued through task forces, such as design-build.
Mr. Anderson said he would ask Ray Maguire of the Contractors’
Association of Greater New York to arrange a session with his members
on that topic.
Before adjourning, Mr. Miller said that he is joining the national
AIA board and will be able to address issues important to New York.
Adjournment
There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 1:45
p.m.
