Watchlist
Lower
Manhattan Redevelopment Corporation In response to the devastation
wrought on lower Manhattan, Governor Pataki announced the creation
of the Lower Manhattan Redevelopment Corporation. Under the auspices
of the Empire State Development Corporation (ESDC), the Redevelopment
Corporation will oversee all aspects of the revitalization and rebuilding
of the area south of Houston Street. Similar in scope to the corporation
that successfully coordinated the rebirth of Times Square, the joint
City/State entity will direct all transportation and infrastructure
projects, along with an overall economic development plan to attract
and retain businesses throughout the affected zone.
The board of the Redevelopment Corporation will be comprised of
nine members, six of which will be appointed by the Governor and
the remaining three by the Mayor. An advisory committee comprised
of business, labor and interested community leaders will assist
the Redevelopment Corporation in identifying and assessing the needs
of downtown, while the resources of the Port Authority, the MTA
and a host of other City and State agencies will be made available
to support the process.
On December 20, ESDC Chairman Charles Gargano will address a Construction
Industry Breakfast Forum on plans for the new agency. The Building
Congress will monitor the progress and activities of the Redevelopment
Corporation and will provide advisory assistance.
