New York Building Congress Salutes Four Extraordinary Government & Industry Leaders

2006 Industry Recognition Dinner Honors Richard Seth Hayden,Peter S.Kalikow, Frank J. Sciame and Maryanne Gridley

Nearly 1,000 members of the building community gathered to pay tribute to four industry leaders – Richard Seth Hayden, Peter S. Kalikow, Frank J. Sciame and Maryanne Gridley – during the New York Building Congress 2006 Industry Recognition Dinner at the Grand Hyatt New York on October 19.

During the annual gala event, which recognizes the brilliant careers and dedicated civic leadership of New York City’s foremost members of the design, construction and real estate industry, each recipient took time to reflect on the tremendous teamwork and inspiration they draw from their colleagues, which they said is instrumental in their accomplishments.

In presenting an Industry Recognition Award to Frank J. Sciame, who is CEO of Sciame Construction Company and Past Chairman of the Building Congress, Bovis Lend Lease CEO and Dinner Chairman Peter A. Marchetto said, “I have been in the industry for a long time,
and there can’t be a more deserving honoree than Frank. Leadership is instinctive to Frank and he never shirks responsibility. He cares deeply about New York City and our industry.”

In accepting his award, Mr. Sciame described his admiration for the men and women of the industry and for those he credited most for his accomplishments, his parents and his colleagues.

Speaking from a raised platform, he said, “I am very fortunate because tonight I am able to look down upon two people I have looked up to all my life – my mom and dad.” To the
executives of Sciame Construction, he said, “Any award I receive, I do so on your shoulders.”

In presenting an Industry Recognition Award to Swanke Hayden Connell Architects Managing Principal Richard Seth Hayden, Bostonn Properties Senior Vice President Robert
E. Selsam said, “Richard Hayden is recognized around the world both for restoration of landmark buildings and the design of modern office towers. He has spearheaded the growth of his firm, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, so it is particularly fitting that we get to honor him tonight. His work on the restoration of the Statue of Liberty – as chief restoration architect – was widely hailed around the world.”

Mr. Hayden said, “The truth is, it takes a great many people to arrive at this first century mark. I would like to thank the past and present principals and employees of this firm, and I’d like to say the future ones as well.” After all, he said, “The most exciting part of Swanke Hayden Connell’s history is yet to come.”

Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman Peter S. Kalikow, who also serves as President of H.J. Kalikow & Company, was presented his award by STV Group Chairman/CEO Dominick M. Servedio, who also serves as Chairman of the Building
Congress. Said Mr. Servedio,“Peter Kalikow’s contributions to New York City are critically important and deserving of our utmost appreciation. Not content with keeping the trains running day and night, Peter has invested in our transit future and been an
articulate advocate for a 21st Century transportation system. There is considerable speculation about what he will do next. All we know is that New York City no doubt will be the beneficiary.”

In accepting his award, Mr. Kalikow thanked his colleagues at the MTA and members of the building industry for helping to jumpstart the first real expansion of the transit system in generations. “When good people get together, they can make things happen. You
have done a great job. You have changed the face of New York. You have ensured that our children and our children’s children will enjoy a better system than we inherited.”

Perkins Eastman Architects Principal Mary-Jean Eastman presented a Special Recognition Award to the Executive Director of the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York, Maryanne Gridley, saying, “Maryanne has distinguished herself over the past twelve years as a highly capable and responsive public official who is available to our industry and who has shown an extraordinary capacity for managing a very large capital construction program.”

Ms. Gridley praised the Building Congress for its invaluable service to New York, citing its agenda of timely and accurate research, outreach, advocacy and generous philanthropy to the New York community. She also outlined the State’s lengthy list of accomplishments under Governor George E. Pataki, including East Side Access, new capital funding, a rail ink to JFK Airport and the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan. “These accomplishments are a noteworthy testament to the legacy of this Governor,” she said.

The evening also included a videotaped greeting from Governor Pataki and a video presentation narrated by Mr. Marchetto, which, in addition to saluting the evening’s honorees, highlighted the industry’s contributions to New York City’s remarkable recovery in the aftermath of 9/11.

“Each year, we recognize the extraordinary leadership and professional accomplishments of top leaders in our industry. Including this year, we have honored 30 exceptional individuals
from design, construction, real estate and government,” said Building Congress President Richard T. Anderson. “Our thanks to our Dinner Chairman Peter Marchetto as well as to our Executive Co-Chairmen Joseph Aliotta, Sam Spata and D. James Stamatis for their exceptional work in making this evening one of the most successful ever.”
