GOVERNORS ISLAND OPEN SPACE DESIGN COMPETITION
------------
PUBLIC COMMENT UNDERWAY

On May 31, the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corp. (GIPEC) unveiled competing designs for a new park and promenade for Governors Island, in the center of New York Harbor. Five teams submitted their conceptual ideas for a new two mile Great Promenade, a new park at the southern end of the Island and rejuvenated landscapes in the Island’s Historic District.

GIPEC is soliciting public comment on the design proposals, which are exhibited in The Park at the Center of the World: Five Visions for Governors Island, on view at the American Institute of Architects’ Center for Architecture and on Governors Island.

A subsidiary of the Empire State Development Corporation, GIPEC is responsible for the planning, redevelopment and ongoing operations for 150 acres of Governors Island. GIPEC seeks to make the Island a destination with great public open space and heritage tourism attractions, as well as education, conference and cultural arts facilities. To accomplish that goal, GIPEC is taking actions to establish the identity of the Island and raise its public profile, increase early public uses and access and attract private development interest and commitments. The early design of the public open space is a first step to the development of the whole island.
