Events
The New York Building Congress has earned a strong reputation for its ability to bring together prominent players from design, construction, and real estate, as well as public officials who manage and implement New York City's infrastructure projects, economic development initiatives, and capital programs. The broad spectrum of Building Congress policy forums, awards galas, and special events provide members with the opportunity to debate and influence emerging issues, salute the achievements of colleagues, and network with associates across all industry sectors.
For more than 23 years, the Building Congress Construction Industry Forum series has served as a platform for City, State, and federal officials to discuss capital plans and receive feedback from the building community. Recent highlights include United States Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan, in September 2013, detailing the Obama administration's rebuilding strategy and ongoing response to Superstorm Sandy; the annual Construction Outlook Forum in October 2013, featuring remarks by Related Hudson Yards President L. Jay Cross and the release of the latest Building Congress multi-year construction forecast; the Annual Membership Meeting and Construction Industry Luncheon Forum in January 2014, with greetings from First Deputy Mayor Anthony E. Shorris and a keynote address by Silverstein Properties Chairman Larry A. Silverstein; New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer, in February 2014, reviewing the City's economy and financial outlook; and Port Authority of New York & New Jersey Executive Director Patrick J. Foye, in April 2014, discussing the Port Authority's 10-year capital plan and the Building Congress report Moving Midtown West.
Nearly 2,200 members and guests joined the Building Congress to honor a group of exceptional men and women whose professional and personal accomplishments have helped shape and improve the City. Honorees at the 2013 Industry Recognition Dinner and 93rd Anniversary Leadership Awards Luncheon included Gail Grimmett, Senior Vice President, Delta Air Lines; Anthony P. Schirripa, Chairman and CEO, Mancini Duffy/TSC; J. Robert Mann Jr., Chairman, E-J Electric Installation Co.; Anthony E. Mann, President and CEO, E-J Electric Installation Co.; John M. Dionisio, Past Chairman, New York Building Congress, and Executive Chairman, AECOM; Thomas F. Gilbane Jr., Chairman and CEO, Gilbane, Inc.; and John E. Zuccotti, Co-Chairman, Brookfield Office Properties. Special Recognition was given at the Dinner to the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey for its outstanding response to Superstorm Sandy.
In June 2013, the Building Congress held a New Member Reception, where the newest members of the Building Congress and industry leaders gathered for a friendly breakfast. Featured speakers included DASNY President and CEO Paul T. Williams, Jr., New York City Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Carter H. Strickland, Jr., and Cornell Tech NYC Vice President Cathy Dove.
Other annual events raise support for and awareness of the important work of the New York Building Foundation. Most recently, these events included the 7th Annual Premier Wine Dinner, the 12th Annual Theatre Benefit, and an auction held at the Building Congress annual Golf Outing.
