Events
Bringing together leaders from the design, construction and real estate industry is at the heart of the Building Congress' mission. This goal is met in large part through the organization's wide range of events, which offers members the opportunity to network with friends and associates across all sectors, discuss and influence emerging issues, and salute the achievements of colleagues.
For nearly 25 years, the Building Congress' Construction Industry Breakfast and Luncheon event series has served as a platform for city, state and federal officials entrusted with planning, funding, and implementing public works projects and economic development initiatives in the New York City region to address and receive feedback from the building community. Recent highlights include: New York State Senate Majority Leader John J. Flanagan in June 2016, discussing the State's legislative priorities; New York City Council Member Daniel Garodnick and then-New York City Department of City Planning Director Carl Weisbrod in September 2016, giving an overview of the Greater East Midtown rezoning; the annual Construction Outlook Breakfast in October 2016, featuring remarks by Alicia Glen, Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development, and the release of the latest Building Congress multi-year construction forecast; the Annual Membership Meeting and Construction Industry Luncheon in January 2017, with remarks by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who discussed affordable housing and improving the City's infrastructure; and a March 2017 Construction Industry Breakfast, featuring newlyappointed President and CEO of the New York City Economic Development Corporation James Patchett, and newly-appointed Director of the New York City Department of City Planning and Chair of the City Planning Commission Marisa Lago.
Nearly 2,000 members and guests joined the Building Congress at the 2016 Industry Recognition Dinner and 96th Anniversary Leadership Awards Luncheon to honor a group of outstanding men and women whose professional and personal accomplishments have helped shape and improve the city. Honorees at these premier events included: Richard T. Anderson, President Emeritus of the New York Building Congress; Ralph J. Esposito, President, New York, Lend Lease (US) Construction LMB Inc.; Charles F. Murphy, Senior Vice President, Turner Construction Company; Thomas Z. Scarangello, P.E., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Thornton Tomasetti; Husam Ahmad, P.E., Chairman and CEO, HAKS; Jill N. Lerner, FAIA, Principal, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, P.C.; and Anthony Shorris, First Deputy Mayor, City of New York.
Other annual events raise support for and awareness of the important work of the New York Building Foundation. Most recently, these events included the 10th Annual Premier Wine Dinner, the 14th Annual Theatre Benefit, and an auction held at the Building Congress Annual Golf Outing.
