New York Building Foundation Welcomes Two New Sites to Construction for a Livable City Program

Equity Residential and Toll Brothers Enroll 400 Park Avenue South Residential Project
Lend Lease, Levien and Company and Extell Development Sign Up 55 Story Times Square Hotel

Two new sites have enrolled in the New York Building Foundation's Construction for a Livable City Program - a voluntary program for the building industry to improve the quality of construction site management.

Construction for a Livable City (CLC) began as an initiative of the New York Building Foundation, the charitable arm of the New York Building Congress, to investigate ways to improve the appearance and impact of construction sites on the surrounding community. The Foundation issued a report in 2010 recommending creation of a voluntary program in which building owners and contractors would agree to adopt a checklist of twenty-six quality construction site management practices on new projects.

Both organizations agreed to implement the CLC Checklist, which asks participants to provide high quality fencing, sheds and barriers that are attractive, clean and minimize impacts on pedestrians and neighbors. The Checklist encourages reducing environmental impacts from noise, solid and fluid waste, dust and dirt. Finally, the firms agreed to establish resources to ensure the surrounding community is aware of what is happening onsite and have a point of contact for the project.

When completed, 400 Park Avenue South will be a 40 story, 475,000 square foot residential building on a corner that had long been an undeveloped parking lot. The building will feature world-class architecture, ground level retail and approximately 370 residential units of luxury residences. The value of construction is $180 million and will create 400 construction jobs during the highpoint of construction.

Extell, Lend Lease, and Levien and Company are working to develop a 55 story, four-star Hyatt hotel that will cater to the City's booming tourism industry and business travelers. Lend Lease has participated in a number of well-regarded projects involved in Construction for a Livable City. The project is valued at $300 million and will create 180 construction jobs and high quality permanent jobs in the hospitality sector.

These sites join a range of high profile projects across the City that have enrolled in CLC, including Columbia University's Manhattanville Campus project, Boston Properties' new commercial tower on West 55th Street, and Edward J. Minskoff Equities' new office tower at 51 Astor Place.

Frank J. Sciame, Chairman of the Construction for a Livable City Advisory Committee, said, "We welcome these sites to the Construction for a Livable City program. We hope that soon the goals of CLC will become the industry standard for quality site management and community relations."
