Statement on NY Gov. Hochul's 2024 State of the State Address

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 9, 2024

“Gov. Hochul is exactly right — we will only begin to address our affordability crisis by ‘building hundreds of thousands of homes’ that New Yorkers desperately need,” said Carlo A. Scissura, Esq., President & CEO of the New York Building Congress. “As the governor’s office noted today in their State of the State announcement, the Building Congress found residential construction dropped by 62 percent in 2023, but we have an opportunity this year to define a generation’s worth of growth and development in New York.

That also means investing in the sustainable infrastructure New Yorkers rely on, including world-class transportation and healthcare, while creating good-paying jobs for the state’s talented and diverse workforce. The Building Congress will work closely with our elected partners to make this vision a reality, which starts with the governor’s proposals to incentivize the construction of new homes through a thoughtful replacement of the 421-a program, eliminating the FAR cap and supporting creative solutions like office-to-residential conversions.

Gov. Hochul proclaimed, ‘Let them build,’ and that’s exactly what our members intend to do once these forward-thinking policies are in place.”
