Annual Report 2012

Research & Publications

The New York Building Congress, with support from its charitable arm, the New York Building Foundation, implements a research and publications program that focuses on data-driven analysis of current market conditions as well as commentary on longer-range public policy issues.

Using a wide range of up-to-date economic and construction sources, the Building Congress is serving its members, the industry, and policy makers by providing insights into emerging trends and challenges related to infrastructure and private development throughout the five boroughs.

Building Congress publications are delivered directly to members, government officials, the media, and other interested parties through email and the Building Congress website, as well as through periodic direct member mailings.

New York City Construction Outlook 2011-2013
This annual forecast and analysis, which focuses on three years of construction spending and employment, remains a signature Building Congress publication. Widely circulated among business, labor, and policy communities, the forecast serves as a barometer for the City's economy and is widely quoted by elected officials, civic leaders, and journalists Citywide. The next installment will be unveiled at an October Construction Industry Forum.

Electricity Outlook: Powering New York City Through 2030
Led by its Energy Committee, the New York Building Congress launched the fourth report on the state of New York City's energy supply. The 2011 report found that, absent new sources of generating capacity, the City's electricity supply could fall below the threshold needed to ensure reliability and prevent price spikes starting in 2016. The analysis concluded that it will be necessary to add an additional 1,000 MW of capacity, in addition to projects currently in the pipeline, between 2014 and 2016. The additional capacity is required as a hedge against such potential risks as the closure of the Indian Point Energy Center or a strong economic recovery.

Public Infrastructure Dividends
In August, 2011, the New York Building Foundation released this report which seeks to educate policy makers, as well as the business and civic communities, on the unique short- and long-term benefits of government investments in New York City infrastructure. The analysis, which included case studies, lays out the immediate benefits of capital outlays, as well as the lasting economic and societal benefits of investing in the systems that sustain the City.

New York City Construction Outlook Update
Now in its fourth year, the New York City Construction Outlook Update series accesses real-time data on a range of leading building industry indicators to provide a monthly snapshot of conditions and trends affecting all sectors of the industry. The publication, which blends raw data with timely commentary, has recently focused on such key issues as office sector development, building industry employment, workforce demographics, and construction spending.

Infrastructure Update
In early 2010, the Building Congress launched Infrastructure Update, a data-driven monthly analysis of key infrastructure policy and budgetary programs. The publication examines the prospects and challenges facing all of the various City, State, Regional, and Federal entities entrusted with the maintenance and expansion of key infrastructure systems. Recent editions have focused on the capital budget of the City of New York, mass transit funding, project procurement opportunities, and healthcare construction.
